The primary purpose of Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) systems in Pennsylvania is to enhance safety at signalized intersections by enforcing compliance at locations with a history of red‑light violations. ARLE provides an automated enforcement function that would otherwise require police presence, assuming sufficient staffing were available. By implementing ARLE, police departments are able to allocate their resources toward more serious criminal activity while the system delivers continuous, 24/7 enforcement at intersections where red‑light running presents elevated safety risks.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) systems were initially authorized under Act 86 of 2018, which established a pilot program along U.S. Route 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Ninth Street and the Philadelphia–Bucks County line. Act 38 of 2023 subsequently made the pilot program permanent and expanded its applicability to Roosevelt Boulevard and up to five additional corridors within the City of Philadelphia. ASE systems provide continuous, automated monitoring of designated roadway segments to identify and enforce speeding violations.
